Don’t wait until you get home to decorate for the holiday season! Decorate your dorm room with college style using simple, inexpensive ideas that will get you into the holiday spirit without hampering your gift-buying budget.  College dorms are notoriously small so don’t overdo the holiday decorating — visions of the classic movie Holiday Vacation with Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold come to mind.

Stick to classic holiday decorating traditions. Begin your dorm decorating project by thinking of traditional holiday decorations: lights in the yard, a wreath on the door, ornaments on the tree, beautifully wrapped presents, the smells of the season floating through the air, spending treasured time with family and friends. Each of these holiday decorating traditions can be incorporated into dorm decorating for the holidays. Less is more.

Decorate your Dorm with Christmas Lights

Christmas lights are an inexpensive way to get started with your holiday decorating. Select colored Christmas lights and string them around the entry door to your room and around your dorm window.

Your Dorm Room Needs a Christmas Tree

Holiday dorm decorating would not be complete without a small Christmas tree. A small tree is all you need and can be placed on top of a dresser or desk or in the windowsill. There are so many inexpensive artificial tabletop Christmas trees available and some come completely decorated with tiny Christmas ornaments. Don’t have access to a Christmas tree? Gather some branches and secure with a rubber band or string. Arrange in a large container and decorate with lights, ribbons, and ornaments.

Decorate your Dorm Room and Christmas Tree with Ornaments

Christmas ornaments don’t have to be fancy or expensive to be attractive. Grab a box of small candy canes and hang from the branches. Add bows to your tree made from ribbon and pull apart cotton balls to add “snow” to your dorm tree. Search the web for DIY Christmas ornament ideas that are simple, easy, and affordable.

Decorate your Dorm Door for the Holidays

Pick up some inexpensive holiday wrapping paper and large ribbon and wrap the door to your dorm room like a present. Once you have the wrapping paper on the door add the ribbon in a cross configuration. Add a small wreath where the ribbon comes together in the center of the door (use a 3M adhesive hook secured directly to the door). Add a large jingle bell to your door handle.

Fill Your Dorm Room with the Smells of the Season

It’s starting to smell a lot like Christmas! Filling your dorm room with the scents of the holiday season will definitely put you in holiday decorating mode. Candles are not an option – dorm rooms and an open flame are not a good combo! Replace the college essential Febreeze with the holiday scented Febreeze spray, available for a limited time during the season, with scents such as Fresh Evergreen & Snow and Apple Spice & Holiday Berries. Add a wall plug-in with the holiday fragrance of your choice. Fragrance plug-ins are available from everywhere from Bath & Body Works to your local grocery store or Walmart.
